SHORT VIDEO MARKETING
Why Use Short Video Marketing
First, content marketing has been trending now for many years and it consists of your brand showing up on social media and other places in order to serve your potential customers so that the viewer/follower/reader can get to know, like, and trust your brand. Think about it. Most of you found me on social media, you liked how I served my community and you trusted me to make a purchase.
Next, short videos are the newest thing and when anything is new the social media platforms will push very high in the algorithm. Remember the algorithm is a computer that tells the platform what to show you and what to show our potential customers when they log on.
It's very addicting!! The more short stories a viewer consumes, the more they stay on that platform. These platforms are fighting for your and our buyers attention.
If we can learn to utilize this new feature while it's so popular to our advantage, it will help us.
A word of caution, always remember who you want for a customer and this will help you to determine how you can serve.
Serving = inspiring, motivating, educating or entertaining your ideal customer
Short Video Strategy
Have a Game Plan or Strategy
It can be easy to get distracted and caught up with making short videos that are trendy, silly, or funny but you always need to remember who your ideal customer is.
Ultimately your goal for making short videos is to get new customers, right?
So if you only produce silly and meaningless short videos, your ideal customer may see you but they won't know what to do in order to work with you.
Here are my suggestions:
- Have a mixture of fun and silly but make sure it always relates to your niche, industry, and business.
- You can have a few non business realted peppered in the mix but the majority of the videos should be about your brand.
- Always keep the focus of your ideal customer in mind and remember your goal is to serve them.
- Go viral with videos that speak to your industry or niche, not on a personal level.
- Try to target people who don't know what your niche or services are. For example, as a wreath seller, I would focus on educating my followers that wreaths are meant year-round and can be placed throughout the home, not just the front door.
- Use a linktree or link in bio (we have training for this in our portal) to direct questions and followers to learn more about you off the platform.
Structure of a video
- The first few seconds are important that you try to hook the viewer in. You can use text bubbles or your voice to give a hook. For example, 'this is why you should never hang a wreath in a bathroom', or '5 places to hang a wreath in your home'. You want to quickly give reasons for the viewer to keep watching the video.
- Then 3-5 talking points supporting the hook or topic of the video.
- Give a Call to Action
- Use captions to give more information
- Use hashtags
- Use voiceover if possible for better-performing videos.
Tip: if you forget to add captions or hashtags on TikTok, you can quickly swipe up before it loads 100% to edit it.
Create pillars of content
With your business create 3-5 pillars of content and then focus on creating videos that rotate through those pillars. Example as a wreath seller: customer service, quality construction, custom orders/placing orders, holiday /seasonal decorating,
How to Create Instagram & Facebook Reels
Remember your Ideal Customer when creating!
Platforms are different but they all work similarly. So if you can complete a task, say trim a video clip on Instagram, you can also do it on other platforms. It's just a matter of figuring out where the option is located.
When starting, try to keep videos approximately 15 seconds long to have a better chance of beating the algorithm, discussed further down this page.
First 5 Short Videos to Make
- Create a reel introducing who you are, where you’re from, what you make, and why you got started.
- Create a reel introducing your staff. If it's just you, introduce yourself with your name, business name, how long you’ve been making, why you got started (make it about the customer, not you), and where people can learn more (website, Etsy shop or opt-in for a coupon)
- Create a 15-second reel showing off 3-5 of your most recent items (sold or not sold)
- Create a reel showing you boxing a wreath and how you make your shipping special.
- Create a reel showing how to use an item you make.
Creating TikTok Videos
Creating Cover Graphics
Cover Graphics Created in Canva
Why cover images?
Cover images are a great way to tell your viewers what your short story is about and a way they can find it quickly when referring back. Example, you create a reel showing 3 ways a viewer can order from you. Create a cover photo with the words 'Ways to Order from Us'.
You can create cover images using the free app, Canva.com on your mobile or computer or you can create one directly in the Instagram story.
Cover Graphics Created in Instagram Story
Sometimes when you're already on Instagram creating a reel, it may be easier to create the cover photo directly within the app. It can be a little trickier because of the way they layer their elements vs Canva but it gets the job done.
Writing Caption Tips
Captions are the words that you type after you've created your short video but before you post it.
Writing Captions Tips
Captions should be about the viewer and not about you. I like to use the word 'you' in the first sentence of my caption to remind myself, it's about the viewer and not about me. For example, Do YOU like to decorate for Halloween; When do YOU start decorating for Christmas; How often do YOU change the wreath on your door, etc.
Your caption is truncated and only shows the first few words until the viewer clicks on the read more link, so try to get right to the point asking your engaging question or hook to get the viewer to comment or pique interest.
The length of captions seems to be a big debate. Some experts I follow say longer captions while others say shorter. I write my caption to keep it to one topic of discussion which can help to keep it short but if this means I write 3 paragraphs, then that's what I write. I would test to see which does better for your audience.
Use spacing when you can with returns, this makes it easier for the eye to scan and the brain to digest quicker. Even one sentence can be considered a paragraph. I've not been able to find a return button when writing Facebook Reel captions yet. Either I've not found it or it doesn't exist. So I keep these captions very short.
Use emojis to draw the eye to a specific place in the caption.
Always use hashtags. Hashtags are there to train the algorithm what your video is about and to decide who to show it to in the platform. More about hashtags later in this training is below.
Always use a CTA. CTA stands for Call to Action. This is where you tell the viewer what to do next. This can include and is not limited to:
- Follow for more
- Comment below
- Send me a DM
- Click the link in bio
- Save for later
- Share with a friend
Later in the training, I'll give you examples of a viewer's journey you can use to help funnel your viewers and this will help you determine what CTA to use.
Get More Views on Short Videos
These are things you can do after you post a video to get more eyes on your short videos. The more watch time, the more it will be moved up in the algorithm to show to other followers and nonfollowers of your accounts.
- Reply to comments on videos as soon as you can. I like to do this about an hour after I post and again in the evening and then before I post another video.
- Share - Share a reel to your stories with a poll (see a tutorial to the left)
- Heart or Like - Go heart and like other comments on other posts or short videos you've created. This sends a notification to the mobile device that this has happened and they could come back to see it and then see your newest video. I've tested this and it is effective.
- Repurpose - You can post the same video on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest but remember to remove the watermark and mute the music. You'll want to use the music from the platform you're sharing too.

Batch Processing Short Videos
What is Batching?
When you make a cookie you’re not going to make the dough for just one cookie and bake only one cookie at a time. You’re going to mix up the dough for 12-24 cookies and you’re going to bake dozens of cookies all at once. This is what batch making/ creating is. So instead of creating one short video at a time, you’re gonna learn to create multiple at a time and save them as a draft.
This technique works for all platforms but I’m going to focus on Instagram Reels.
Step 1 - Start with a number. How many do you want to do? Is it 3 or is it 5? Know this first.
Step 2 - Look for inspiration in 4 places
- questions you’ve received in DM’s or questions on your posts. What questions is your audience asking?
- look at trending music
- search reels using the hashtags for your niche
- your own reels discover feed
Styles of reels to batch process
- talking head tip or question answered
- green screen
- Music Feature - find ones you like to give you ideas
